Frederick Gabriel started his insurance career as a commercial lines underwriter at Royal Insurance Company in London.
He was attracted by the development of captives in the late 1970's and joined the UK office of the Bermuda headquartered International Risk Management Group (Fred Reiss) to service US corporate clients in Europe and to develop new captive business for European companies.
In this role he travelled extensively and by building on the job experience he gained a wide ranging knowledge on captive domiciles and the use of captive structures to optimise risk transfer strategies as well as an in depth knowledge of international insurers with whom he placed the fronted captive programmes.
He became interested in Luxembourg in 1984 at the time when the law was passed on reinsurance captives and in 1988 he moved to Luxembourg to open the AIG captive management office. This was the beginning of a long term association with Luxembourg because he later joined a local independent management company Gecalux (now AON) where he was General Manager with the responsibility for the development of captives, principally in Europe but after researching the Asian market he was instrumental in the formation of eight Japanese captives in Luxembourg and Switzerland.
He moved to Marsh in 2001 where he was captive Business Development Leader in the EMEA region with responsibilities to develop captives principally in the major European captive domiciles. This was done in conjuntion with the Marsh retail network and this led to an active involvement with the implications of the Solvency II Directive and the teams of actuaries and consultants both for studies and lobbying purposes.
During this dynamic development period for captives Frederick was a regular contributor on captive issues at international conferences as well as having articles published in the insurance trade press. During the course of his career he has been asked to sit on the boards of the captives of a number of international clients. In 2009 in recognition of his work to develop Luxembourg as an international captive domicile Frederick was awarded the Ordre de la Couronne de Chêne by the Luxembourg Government.
For the last two years, prior to retirement, Frederick ran the Marsh Luxembourg broking office and he was instrumental in forming APCAL, which is an association representing all brokers. He was elected President for 2012-2013.
Frederick was educated in the UK and holds a diploma in legal and economics and is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Born in 1946, he is married with three children.
